Why use DataverseNO?¶
Below are some of the key reasons to use DataverseNO to archive, publish, and reuse data:
A certified repository¶
DataverseNO is managed and developed in line with best practices in research data management. It was CoreTrustSeal certified in 2020 and is currently renewing its certification. CoreTrustSeal is a seal of quality for trustworthy and sustainable repositories.
Curation and preservation¶
All datasets deposited in DataverseNO are curated by qualified research data management staff at the partner institutions prior to publication.
Curators review each dataset and advise users on how to best align with the DataverseNO deposit guidelines. The guidelines are based on the FAIR Principles to support Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable data, and cover aspects such as metadata and documentation, file organization and formats.
The curation process distinguishes DataverseNO from many other digital repositories, where deposited data are not reviewed before publication. However, curation is not an assessment of your research, it is a support service to help align your data with recognized principles and practices for data archiving, publishing, and preservation. DataverseNO curators are committed to helping you succeed! Meet all our curators on the support page.
In addition to curation, DataverseNO ensures long-term preservation of published datasets, as described in the DataverseNO Preservation Policy. Datasets are responsibly maintained for at least 10 years and migrated to new formats if needed.
Credit and visibility¶
Using DataverseNO helps you to comply with journal and funder requirements, and ensures that others can easily find, access and credit your dataset:
- Facilitating peer-review: DataverseNO allows you to share dataset drafts with journal editors and reviewers through a preview URL before publication. For double-blind peer review, curators can create an anonymized version of the dataset draft.
- Fulfilling data sharing requirements: Funders, journals and institutions often require research data to be shared in line with recognized principles. Publishing your data in DataverseNO helps ensure compliance with these requirements. Examples include policies and guidelines from: The Research Council of Norway, The European Research Council, The Science journals.
- Citation: Datasets in DataverseNO are assigned persistent identifiers (DOIs – Digital Object Identifiers), providing stable and unique references. DOIs enable reliable citation, which increases academic credit and makes datasets easier to find and reuse.
- Indexing in search databases: DataverseNO datasets are indexed and searchable in multiple discovery services, including B2FIND – EUDAT, Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE), DataCite Commons, Google Dataset Search, and Oria. This broadens their reach beyond DataverseNO and improves visibility and impact.
The wide dissemination is enabled through metadata harvesting. DataverseNO releases all metadata under the Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication (CC0), which allows free use and redistribution. Metadata can be harvested via the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) using the following addresses:
