Step 3: Curation and publishing¶
This step explains how to get your dataset published in DataverseNO. After you have submitted your dataset for review, it will be reviewed by qualified research data management staff, referred to as curators, before publication.
The curation process¶
Curators do not evaluate the scientific quality of the research itself. Curation is a support process intended to help prepare data for publication and reuse.
A curator will contact you as soon as possible after your dataset has been submitted for review, usually within three working days.
The curator typically returns a curation report, which contains tips and suggestions for improvements to:
-
Documentation: Metadata and ReadMe file(s).
-
File organization.
-
File formats.
-
Licensing information.
If needed, you make the recommended changes. Alternatively, you can explain why you do not agree with specific suggestions. When you are done with the revisions, you must submit the dataset for review again.
The time required to complete the review depends on factors such as the size of the dataset, the completeness of the documentation, and whether changes or clarifications are needed before publication. Some datasets can be reviewed quickly, while others may require additional dialogue between the depositor and the curator. In all cases, the depositor will normally receive an initial response from a curator within three working days after submitting the dataset for review.
Read more about the curation process on the about page.
Urgent cases
If your dataset is associated with a publication deadline, grant deadline, or another time-sensitive activity, please contact your local user support directly. They can help assess the situation and, where possible, coordinate an expedited review process.
Get your dataset published¶
When both of the following conditions are met, the curator publishes the dataset:
-
The curator has confirmed that the dataset is ready for publication.
-
The depositor has confirmed that the dataset should be published.
When the dataset is published:
-
The dataset becomes publicly accessible.
-
The DOI becomes active.
-
The dataset becomes searchable in DataverseNO and external discovery services.
-
The dataset can be cited and shared as research output.
Need help?¶
If you are unsure about any part of the curation or publication process, contact your local user support.
Ready for the next step?¶
Once the dataset is published, it can be cited in articles, reports, dissertations, and other research outputs. Learn more about how to cite datasets in the fourth step of the guidelines. If you want to modify an already published dataset, you can proceed to the final step of the guidelines.
